RAMADAN WORKING HOURS AND EID UL - FITR HOLIDAYS IN SAUDI ARABIA - 2011

During the month of Ramadan, the actual working hours for Muslim employees shall be reduced to a maximum of six hours a day or thirty-six hours a week.

For government employees, working hours will be 5 hours. As per Ministry of Civil Service, the offices including Javasath (Passport office) would open from 10 am to 3 pm. In government sector, employees are getting 10 days vacation this year. Eid vacation will be 10 days starting from Ramadan 25 (August 25) and government employees and students has to resume work and studies on Shawwal 6 (Sep 4). At the same time emergency section of the Javasath etc, will be opened during holidays also.

For private sector, as per Ministry of Labor, working hours will be 6 hours during the day time in compliance with Article 98 of Saudi Labor law. Employer can opt this in weekly basis also, i.e, 36 hours per week. All working hours beyond these hours and performed during Eid shall be considered overtime hours.

As far as holidays concerned in private sector, the employer shall give minimum four days paid leave to the employer as per Article 112 of Saudi labor law. The employer shall consider Ramadan 29 as the last working day. It is the minimum holidays as per law and it may be more as per the contract terms between employer and employee.
